Two Queen’s Awards in One Year

Queen's AwardTo gain one Queen’s Award is impressive; for Gooch & Housego companies to gain two in one year is an astounding achievement. This year in April, Kent Periscopes, one of our recently acquired companies, was given the Export Award whilst Gooch & Housego (Torquay) was given the Innovation Award. Both awards were then formally presented to the companies in November.

The Export Award was received for International Trade in recognition of Kent Periscopes having achieved outstanding growth in overseas sales over a period of three years. In this period we grew our market beyond the UK, establishing ourselves as a preferred supplier of periscopes to many of the leading armoured fighting vehicle manufacturers around the world. In 2015 over 80% of our business was exported all over the world to countries such as Brazil, Canada, Spain, Malaysia and South Africa.

Across all our manufacturing sites we aim to react to demand with agile production and delivery. This is no less the case with the products we supply to the armored fighting vehicle market. Only with an efficient and dedicated team were we able to react to the increase in demand. Winning the award is thanks the hard work of all our staff in St. Asaph. The Award was presented by Lord Lieutenant for Clwyd, North Wales, Mr Henry George Fetherstonhaugh OBE.

The Innovation Award, presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Devon David Fursdon, was awarded for the invention and commercialisation of the Fiber-Q®. The fiber-coupled acousto-optic modulator is one of G&H’s flagship products. As a compact, packaged photonic device, it is, has and continues to prove itself as an innovative and cost saving product used in a broad array of applications across all the sectors we operate in: defence and security, life and health sciences, materials processing and scientific research.

The Lord Lieutenant of Devon presents the Award to G&H (Torquay) General Manager Graham Catley and G&H CEO Mark Webster.

We were able to take our expertise in acousto-optics and in photonic packaging fiber-coupled devices and marry the two together. This ability demonstrates our ability to understand the needs of the market and produce an innovative and effective solution. This is an approach to R&D we aim to embody across the company.
