Gooch & Housego Hosts Open day and Wins Apprentice AwardTorquay, 14 March 2017
Gooch & Housego (Torquay) once again celebrated National Apprentice and British Science Week by hosting local schools and colleges at an open day to encourage industry awareness for students. For the past three years G&H have run engineering based apprenticeships in collaboration with South Devon College with great success. This was recognised on Thursday evening at the 2017 Apprentice Awards at the Imperial Hotel in Torquay where G&H were announced winners for the category of Best Large Business Contribution (for companies with more than 50 employees).
On Friday 10 March at G&H Torquay, six schools and colleges from Torbay brought students for the open day, gaining a full introduction to the business and a hands on tour of the facility. The students took the opportunity to engage with a large number of our staff during the course of the event and were able to gain valuable insight into how a technology company develops and manufactures products for its customers. This is always a highly rewarding day for our staff and the students involved, and hopefully as in previous years it will lead to a strong set of applicants for our 2017 apprentice intake.
G&H Torquay has developed a number of pathways for high individual into our business, via apprenticeships and graduate schemes to ensure we develop a strong and capable engineering team to deliver our vision of growth. Graham Catley General Manager of G&H Torquay said “It is always a pleasure to welcome the next generation of potential engineers into our company for the open day. We are proud of what we do here, and determined to help those making key life decisions the opportunity to get valuable understanding of how high tech business works and some insight into the broad range of applications our products end up in. It’s a fantastic time to be part of a photonics business and I hope some of the students will agree by applying for either our Apprenticeship program or graduate positions in years to come.”
